Gas, flatulence, wind - what's normal? 02 Sep 2010

"Me and my brothers used to crack up laughing about it when we were kids. And we had no problem taking the credit when one of us 'cleared the room' - but these days it's not so funny. . ."

"I'm writing to ask you about my problem - flatulence, wind or 'gas' or whatever you want call it. I'm not sure if it's related to food because me and my brothers have had it all our lives. Everyone just said it was normal for us and we grew up thinking that.

You do different stuff with your family, than you do at work. My trouble is, now I work in an enclosed office area and it's getting harder to be discreet. I get pretty bad stomach pains trying to keep it in and also stress a lot about it. In fact in meetings I can't think about anything else! Is this 'normal'?"
Dan W. NY

Hi Dan To be scientific about it - some flatulence (flatus, wind or gas) is a normal part of life. It's a product of the human digestive process. Production of methane - a colourless, odourless gas - is normal if it passes easily and doesn't feel hot.

What's normal . . .
But to use your own words - the extent to which you can 'clear the room' is a measure of your food intolerance. Normal flatulence has no smell and passes easily.

If you often have feelings of pressure or heat, or if people notice the smell, then it is a sign of poorly processed or partially processed food in your gut . . . basically it's a sign of food intolerance.

Dan you could even say that unpleasant flatulence is a defining symptom of food intolerance!

It runs in the family
It's not that flatulence runs in families, so much as food intolerance runs in families. Your brothers have the same problem. The ability or inability to fully process foods is passed on in the genes.

So when checking yourself out for food intolerance, check the children too. You'll be doing them a favour and, more importantly for all concerned, avoiding possible serious health risks later in life.

(Remember, it's easy to identify any food intolerance with a simple purpose-designed journal and some comprehensive food guides. That's why we created the Healing program!)

Explaining flatulence
Flatulence means you have eaten something that your system cannot break down properly. In the human intestine all kinds of digestive biochemical reactions are going on all the time.

In a healthy gut these reactions are all in balance. But when your body cannot deal with an unsuitable food, it gets out of balance.

Some chemical reactions slow down, and others generate unusual products like toxic gases, heat and pressure.

The embarrassing result (flatulence) is a sure sign of an unfinished digestive process.

It's all in your genes
Some human bodies simply do not produce the required enzymes to break down certain foods. It's genetic.

If your ancestry was not sufficiently exposed to certain foods, you may be physically unable to produce the enzymes to break those foods down.

For instance, most people of Arabic descent have a long history of eating and surviving on Wheat and other Gluten-bearing grain products. The Arabic people were some of the first humans to cultivate grain crops.

And after thousands of generations they have developed suitable mechanisms, and now produce the right enzymes to properly digest these foods.

But people with other genetic backgrounds - may still be "works in progress". That means they are more likely to be sensitive to Gluten (or Dairy or Fructose etc). The end result is of course that when we do eat those foods the job of digestion doesn't run smoothly and unexpected results can happen . . . like bad flatulence.

In these people gastro-intestinal issues such as bloating, flatulence and chronic diarrhea can become very troublesome - especially later in life when the body is less robust and less tolerant.
